Get there early - check-in opens 90 mins before your flight and closes 30 minutes before take-off. Please remember to bring your valid ID, driver's licence or passport with you when you check-in and board the plane. Infants cannot be checked in using self-service or online check in and must be checked in at the airport counters.

Avoid the queues at the airport:

If standing in queues is not your style, we have self-service machines at all major airports where you can check in and print your own boarding pass. The only catch is that these close 40 minutes prior to your departure time.

Children (aged 2 to 12 years) must have their own ticket and be accompanied by an adult aged 16 years or older. For every 5 kids (aged 2 to 12 years) travelling, you will need 1 adult to accompany them.

Kids over the age of 12 years can travel unaccompanied.

Avoid the stress and anxiety of finding a comfy seat. There are three different ways to secure your kulula seat before flying:

Normal seat selection – select a seat within 24 hours prior to your flight departure using one of our self-service options online, mobi and airport kiosk
Pre-paid seating – this option allows you to book and pay for a preferred seat in advance up to 24 hours prior to your flight departure
Automatic seat allocation – if you haven’t selected either of the above options, your seat will be assigned at the airport check-in counter by one of our friendly check-in agents.

normal seat selection

Choose your seat online within 24 hours prior to flight departure via the web on your desktop, tablet or smart phone. You can select your seat when you check in online or at the airport check-in kiosks.

pre-paid seats

You can buy a seat online 24 hours or more prior to departure but by this time seats are limited and it’s not guaranteed you’ll get the seat you want. To be assured that you have a view of the clouds or a seat close to the food trolley, pre-book your seat for just R35 (incl. VAT).Get more info on pre-paid seats.

automatic seat allocation

It’s not necessary to pre-select your seat before arriving at the airport; this is entirely up to you. If you haven’t gone online to select a seat, a seat will automatically be assigned to you when you check in at the airport counter.

exit row seating conditions

The exit row seats are situated at the emergency doors. For safety reasons these seats are not available in advance for pre-paid seating or online check-in seat selection.

Exit row seats are:

Only assigned at the check-in counters and not available for pre-selection either as pre-paid seats or online check-in
Only available to able-bodied passengers who qualify to meet certain safety requirements
Not available for infants, children, disabled or elderly persons

For kulula and British Airways (operated by Comair) flights, only cats and dogs can be transported on board passenger flights. For all other animals such as snakes, birds, rodents, etc. please call our cargo agent Express Air Services 011 230 4600.

A maximum of 20kg in total including pet, container, food and food carrier is charged at a flat rate of R350
A container that exceeds 20kg and up to 32kg is charged with an additional heavy bag fee of R250
A container that exceeds 32kg will have to be arranged to be carried as cargo at least 24hours before departure. Call Express Air Services 011 230 4600 for a quote and a booking
You cannot purchase extra bags to pay for pet carriage

Transportation of pets is not included in the free checked baggage allowance of 23kg. A handling fee is charged for each pet container:

R350 for a total weight of 23kg and less
A heavy bag levy of R250 is charged for containers over 23kg but less than 32kg

Southern Africa and Mauritius routes

kulula.com manages the transportation of pets for travel on British Airways (operated by Comair) regional flights outside of South Africa and within Africa. Arrange with Express Air Services at least 24 hours prior to departure on 011 390 2841.

Windhoek and Harare requirements

For Windhoek and Harare routes customers must contact Express Air Services on 011 390 2841 so that the state vet can verify that the health of the pet is suitable for travel.

Mauritius pet immigration rules

Please check in advance with the High Commission 012 342 1283/4 for pet immigration rules and quarantine requirements.

Requirements and procedures:

Arrange the necessary health and vaccination certificates beforehand
Make reservations at least 24 hours prior to departure
Ensure that your pet is suitably sedated to lessen any anxiety or stress while flying. Your vet will advise you according to the type of pet and its disposition
Unaccompanied animals must be at cargo 4 hours prior to departure for regional flights and 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights
Ensure the container dimensions and specifications are met

Each animal must be placed in a rigid container that has enough space for them to turn about normally while standing, to stand and sit erect and to lie in a natural position
To determine the correct kennel dimensions:
- the kennel length is the distance from the root of tail to tip of nose plus half the elbow to ground measurement
- The kennel width is twice the width of the widest point. The kennel height is the distance from floor to tip of ears.
The ventilation openings must be small enough so that paws and nose cannot protrude outside the container, but big enough that they can get enough oxygen at 35,000 ft

Puppies and kittens under 10 weeks old
All mammals declared to be pregnant unless they are accompanied by a veterinary health certificate certifying that the animal is fit to travel, less than 6 weeks into the gestation period, and there is no risk of birth occurring during the journey
Nursing females with suckling young

terms and conditions

In accordance with the IATA Live Animal Regulations (LAR) ZAG – 01 that states the South African Government regulations prohibit the carriage of all live animals destined for or in transit through the Republic of South Africa as excess baggage
Live animals destined for or in transit through the Republic of South Africa may only be shipped as manifested cargo
Unaccompanied pets cannot be checked in at the airport but must be taken to our cargo agent
Reservations for a particular flight of your choice should be confirmed 24 hours prior to departure with the cargo agent
The animal and container may not exceed more than 32kg or be placed as cargo
Animals in containers will be carried in the pressurized hold of the aircraft
Unless carrying the animal is covered by the liability rules of the Montreal Convention, kulula.com will not be responsible for their loss, sickness, injury or death unless kulula.com have been grossly negligent

All firearms, ammunition (including that for sporting purposes), harmful articles and/or prohibited items must be declared. Failure to do so may result in the confiscation of such items and/or potential legal action may be taken against you.

Under no circumstances will the following and other hazardous goods be allowed through check-in:

Corrosives
Explosives
Flammable liquids and solids
Radioactive materials
Oxidising materials
Poisons
Infectious substances

Dangerous and harmful items

The following articles and any other items considered as dangerous will only be accepted as checked-in baggage:

Sharp items such as knives or scissors
Sporting bats
Golf clubs
Toy guns

From 1st March 2013 firearms will be prohibited from all kulula and British Airways (operated by Comair) flights.

security measures

To ensure that all our flights to Windhoek, Harare and Mauritius comply with the law, the South African Government has introduced some in-flight restrictions and security measures to all routes outside of South Africa.

All liquids, aerosols, gels and creams should be carried in containers with a capacity not greater than the equivalent of 100ml each
Liquids, aerosols, gels and creams in quantities less than 100ml, carried in part-filled containers larger than 100ml, will not be accepted
Empty containers with a capacity greater than 100ml are permitted
Containers with liquids, aerosols, gels and creams should be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic with a maximum capacity not exceeding 1 litre. The containers must fit comfortably within the transparent bag, which must be completely closed
Each passenger will be permitted to carry one checked-in bag only
All conventional security controls and checks, including random physical searches, are applicable
Exceptions are allowed for medication, baby milk/food and special dietary or other medical supplements
All liquids, aerosols, gels and creams purchased at retail outlets at the airport or onboard the aircraft during the days of the journey should be placed in a Security Tamper Evident Bag (STEB) and should be presented for secondary screening and at transfer security screening
A proof of purchase on the days of travel must accompany the duty free goods bought and placed in the Security Tamper Evident Bag. The bags cannot be opened until the passenger reaches the final destination. If the bags are tampered with, the liquids, aerosols, gels or creams in that bag will not be allowed for carriage.
