Durbs and all that it has to offer is like a sublime paradise, where warm, ocean waters and soft, sandy beaches blend with an intoxicating mix of rich culture and tasty cuisine. But if you scratch beneath this city’s beautiful surface, you’ll find some hidden gems worth exploring.

The Roma Revolving Restaurant

The Roma Revolving Restaurant first opened its doors in 1973, and has since remained one of Durbs’s best kept secrets. Located on the very top floor of the John Ross building, the views supplied here are simply breathtaking come day or night. If you’re not feeling peckish, then Gino’s Sky Bar does just the trick for a thirsty soul. Better yet, time spent here is extra special as this is the only restaurant of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Inanda Mountain

This little spot has, without a doubt, one of the best views not just in Durbs, but in all of South Africa. Just a 30-minute drive from the city itself, you’d swear you were on the other side of the world. The views from atop Inanda Mountain are breathtaking, with vistas of cliff faces towering above the shades and shores of Inanda Dam below.

Waterberry Coffee Shoppe

The Waterberry in Ballito has become something of an understated institution, which mouthwatering confectionaries, delicious teas and moreish coffees. Not only can you find the tastiest treats in KwaZulu-Natal, but you can also come here to enjoy a fantastic variety of succulent meals. Waterberry Coffee Shoppe has sadly burnt down on more than one occasion, but has risen like a phoenix from the ashes each time, returning with all the character it had before.

Mfula Store

Hidden away in the Valley of a 1000 Hills is Mfula Store, an old trading store that still operates today, and doubles as great overnight accommodation for backpackers. Mfula Store’s history is rich and was once a place where merchants could sell anything and everything to the rural community. Surrounding the store are loads of picturesque picnic spots to enjoy.
