Although many things in life may not live up to your expectations,Mauritius is exactly the azure beach paradise you have always dreamt of escaping to. Allow the hot tropical sun to warm your skin as you relax on the shore. Feeling adventurous? Strap on those hiking boots and venture into the wild where you can get hands-on with the region’s unforgettable natural wonders. Even explorers get hungry, so you’ll be delighted to know that ample local markets serve up freshly cooked street food beneath the glow of another perfect sunset over the shimmering Indian Ocean.

Mauritius has over 160km of beautiful beaches, so you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a picture-perfect beach upon which to luxuriate. In the north, choose between the family-friendly shores of Trou aux Biches, and the stretching sands of Mont Choisy with its long row of lush casuarina trees to shade you from the sun. At Pereybere, food stalls, bars and water-based activities abound, right on the beachfront next to white sand and a turquoise sea. Grand Baie offers you great selfie spots, as you do some bay and boat watching at this popular beach.

Water Sports

Once you’ve had your fill of lazy hours spent soaking up the sun, you may find you’re ready to try your hand at some water-based sports. Mauritius has plenty to offer in this department. From stand-up-paddleboarding with a world-class view to taking full advantage of the ocean’s epic power on a windsurfing rig, there’s something for everyone on these bright and bustling shores. Set sail on a Hobie Cat and glide along the ocean with barely a ripple to disrupt you or get your thrills on a wakeboard or waterskis. If you’re feeling bold, strap in for an awesome ocean ride – Fly n’ Dive propels you into the air where you’ll fly like a Marvel superhero and dive with the grace of a dolphin.

Underwater Experiences

Another world awaits submerged off the coast of Mauritius, with plenty of unique ways to explore its depths. Stay close to the surface with a snorkel in place and navigate mangroves and reefs teeming with marine life. Board an underwater scooter cruiser and see flourishing natural reefs up close without the constraints diving apparatus. Be plunged even further into the ocean’s mysterious depths on board a submarine, as predators dart past among deep blue waters. Try something different when you opt for an underwater sea walk, where a glass helmet allows for 360-degree views of the vibrant ocean bed or go for a traditional dive. You are in the world’s leading diving destination after all.

Natural Wonders

Although small in circumference, the island of Mauritius holds a host of awe-inspiring natural wonders well worth a morning or afternoon spent adventuring along the coast. The ‘underwater waterfall’ illusion at Le Morne is enough to boggle the mind of even the science-minded among us while the seven-coloured earths are an otherworldly pallet of earthy tones at Chamarel. The dormant volcano at Trou Aux Cerfs presents visitors with sweeping views of the country’s lush coastal landscape from atop its peak and the Black River Gorges National Park preserves an original rainforest in which you can picnic, birdwatch and hike to your heart’s content.

Culture and history

A melting pot of international cultural influences has influenced Mauritius’s rich heritage. Visit a museum for the full scoop on the island’s complex history. Port Louis’ Photography Museum includes a collection of Tristan Bréville’s cameras along with over a million photos recording history as it happened. Visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Memorial Centre for Culture and learn about how the island gained its independence from the British.

Spa Experiences

Forget your worries when you lie down on the massage table alongside your loved one, doing just the same. Take a plunge in a pristine spa pool and get your feet ready for the beach with a luxurious pedicure. Pay a visit to an ayurvedic for an Indian Massage or the Maritim Tropical Flower Spa with sprawling views of the lush surrounding gardens. Relax and be beautified to feel your best on each day of your stay.

From street food to fine dining, a visit to Mauritius would be incomplete without experiencing its globally-influenced culinary culture. A blend of Indian, African, Chinese, French and British flavours characterize the island’s foodie offerings. Warm biryani, rich with meat and spices is served with roti and rice. Indulge in deep-fried gateau piment, tasty Boulette dumplings and sweet-and-salty pineapple made fresh at a local market. Feeling fancy? Choose from world-class fine dining options with awe-inspiring views of the coastline - the neo-classical Château de Labourdonnais offers an Italian-inspired menu while Amari by Vineet offers authentic Indian dishes in Belle Mare.

Noisy, bustling, colourful markets such as the Marché Central in Port Louis and Bazaar de Grand Baie offer bags, sarongs, dodo-embroidered tablecloths, jewellery and everything else in between. Le Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis is a popular shopping precinct, and its craft market consists of 36 stands set up serenely in a double-floor open bazaar and stocks cane work, glass crafts, local exotic oils and traditional herbs.
