From the small-town charm of the Cape Winelands to the eclectic energy of the city of Cape Town, The Western Cape is brimming with diverse towns close enough to explore on a day out. Here are some of our favourites:
Hop between bountiful orchards and vineyards, tasting your way through the heart of the Elgin Valley. From preserves and pastries to boboties and full breakfasts, you’ll find a host of tantalising, homemade delights that are made according to traditional recipes. Peregrine Farmstall is one such gem, at which you’ll even find mouthwatering vegan goods worth writing home about. Don’t forget to take your mountain bikes along, there are incredible trails for bikers and hiking enthusiasts alike.
Visit the Taalmonument and learn about Paarl’s intricate history as South Africa’s third-oldest settlement. Taste local artisanal cheeses, wines, gins, and beers at the famous Spice Route. Lose yourself in nature-steeped valleys on hikes in Paarl’s picturesque mountain ranges. There’s so much to do, you’ll be itching to return.
This little seaside town becomes a whale-watching mecca between June and December. You can see southern right whales birthing and nursing their calves in the sheltered bay or take an authorised whale-watching boat to get even closer. There are plenty of scenic hikes, most of which afford sweeping sea vistas that will have you snapping away with your camera. When you’re all hiked-out, you can relax and refuel in one of the many quaint cafés and restaurants.
Tucked away in a corner of the West Coast National Park just beyond Postberg Flower Reserve, you’ll find the tiny fishing town of Churchhaven. Trade your WiFi connection for a connection to Mother Nature and witness the springtime wildflowers carpet the landscape in exquisite colours. Laze around the stunning lagoons and count how many rare birds you can see, or while away your leisurely hours on one Churchhaven’s scenic beaches. Here, time seems to stand still.
The azure waters of Calypso Beach call! Pull up a towel and a picnic and spend a day at one of South Africa’s most beautiful beaches. You can also experience a taste of Greece sans the price tag at Club Mykonos, the famous hotel and casino that boasts an eerily authentic Greek theme. Take advantage of the wind and take to the skies for a thrilling kitesurfing experience with conditions so good that professionals regularly make a point of visiting.
